KEIS care

Safety and usage

Simple habits for comfortable, trouble-free riding, and how to look after your kit so it lasts.

44°C

Please read this before you first use your KEIS kit. Heated clothing is safe and comfortable when it is used as intended, but skin is more sensitive to heat than you might think: it can start to blister at as little as 44°C. These simple habits keep every ride comfortable.

Before you ride

Do

  • Make sure the garment fits correctly. A fit so tight that it presses the heating panels hard against your skin can cause burns.

  • Wear a base layer between the garment and your skin. Gloves are the only exception.

  • Follow any instructions attached to or supplied with your garment.

Don't

  • Check the garment and its cables regularly for wear and fatigue. Don't use anything that looks damaged.

While you ride

Do

  • Always use the lowest setting that keeps you comfortable.

  • Stop using it straight away if you feel any discomfort.

Don't

  • Don't use it for long periods, especially on High or when it is warmer than 5°C.

  • Don't use it when it is wet, and that includes excessive sweat.

  • Never leave a KEIS garment unattended while it is switched on.

Power and batteries

Do

  • Power it only from KEIS battery packs or a 12V vehicle system.

  • If you use a KEIS portable battery, always take it out of the garment when you are not using it, and never store it in the garment.

  • Only use genuine KEIS accessories.

Good to know

  • A 12V vehicle can run at considerably more than 12V. If you are not sure about yours, check the vehicle's electrics or use a KEIS battery pack.

Looking after your kit

Not needed every ride: after the kit has been stored, after a long break, and after heavy use.

Do

  • Check every cable and connector: no cuts, fraying, bent pins or corrosion. If anything is damaged, contact us before using it.

  • Make sure the garment is completely dry, inside and out, before you connect it.

  • Before the first ride of the season, test it at home: connect it, switch on and check each setting warms up.

  • Clean it as its care label says, with the battery out and every lead unplugged, and let it dry fully.

  • Store garments clean and dry and loosely folded, so the heating wires are not creased, somewhere cool and out of direct sunlight. Store batteries out of the garment at 40–60% charge, somewhere cool, dry and ventilated, and top them back up to about half every 6 months.

Good to know

  • After a spill or a crash, check the panels, cables and battery before you use them again.

Who should not use it

Don't

  • Don't use heated clothing if you have heightened or impaired sensitivity to temperature.

  • Don't use it if you have circulatory problems. If in doubt, consult your doctor.

  • Not suitable for young children.

Limits of your kit

Don't

  • Don't modify or take apart any part of the system in any way.

Good to know

  • Unless it says otherwise, a KEIS garment is not designed to protect you in a crash. Wear it with your usual protective kit.

  • Visit this page for any updated safety information. We update it whenever our advice changes.

Everyday use

Using your kit

Every KEIS garment works the same way. The interactive manual covers each one in detail.

  • Power it

Connect a KEIS battery to the 12V cable in the garment's zipped pocket, or plug it into the bike with a vehicle supply lead.

  • Switch it on

Long press the button to switch on, short press to change the heat, long press again to switch off. With the link lead fitted instead of a controller, it runs at full power.

  • Connect more kit

A jacket, vest or bodywarmer is the hub: gloves, trousers and socks plug into it and share its power. The J801 is not a hub.

  • Charge the battery

Use the charger or cable supplied. An E1 code on the battery means it is too hot or too cold: bring it back to room temperature to carry on.
